A sacred urban ensemble of multiple temples and sanctuaries with sculptures, inscriptions, wall paintings, and archeological remnants may be found at the Koh Ker archaeological site. Built over twenty-three years, it was the only capital of the Khmer Empire from 928 to 944 CE and one of two rival capitals, the other being Angkor. The layout of King Jayavarman IV’s sacred city is said to have been inspired by prehistoric Indian religious conceptions of the cosmos. The new metropolis showcased avant-garde architectural design, creative expression, and building technology—particularly the utilization of enormous monolithic stone blocks.
