The Shiva-devoted Temple of Preah Vihear is located on the edge of a plateau that overlooks the Cambodian plain. The Temple was built in the early part of the eleventh century AD and consists of a number of sanctuaries connected by a network of walkways and stairwells along an 800-meter axis. However, the hermitage was established in the ninth century, which is where its intricate history began. The main reason this site has been conserved so well is because of its isolated position. The site is remarkable for the high quality of its carved stone ornamentation and its architecture, which is tailored to the natural surroundings and the religious purpose of the temple.
